Determining string length

Question:

Howdy, Just got a couple of fiberglass recurve bows through and auction.  They are low poundage (20-30#) recurve bows, but came without strings.  Is there a rule of thumb I can use in order to get the proper length bow string for these bows so that I can take the wife out shooting? Thanks! Unkel Gilbey

Response:

Make a provisional string of variable length, using the "bowstring knot". Adjust it until the bow looks right, then measure the length. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Howdy, > Just got a couple of fiberglass recurve bows through and auction.  They are > low poundage (20-30#) recurve bows, but came without strings.  Is there a > rule of thumb I can use in order to get the proper length bow string for > these bows so that I can take the wife out shooting? > Thanks! > Unkel Gilbey

The AMO standards give a length of 3" shorter than the length of the bow. See the AMO standards booklet (PDF) for more details. — John

Spoting scope

Question:

HI I am still after some advice on a spoting scope I need to be able to see my nocks clearly at a 100Y is the goal. Would 25 x 60 scope be the best choice for this. 25x 60 = 25 x magnification and a front lens of 60mm Hands

See usenet archives for more discussions on spotting scopes, but yes, 25×60 will generally be suitable for 100y spotting, but beware that some 25×60 scopes give better images than others (image quality, light transmission and field of view and eye relief are all factors to be taken into consideration when chosing a scope – see http://www.obm.co.uk/choosing/spottingscope.htm for a description) Then of course there’s the waterproof/armoured options to consider. One of my favourite scopes (aso a favourite of full and small-bore rifle shooters) is the Opticron AA63A (http://www.obm.co.uk/products/db/40302.htm) which is only 22×60 but gives a large, bright image with a wide field of view and good eye relief.

I’ve got an Opticron 22×70 and still have difficulty seeing nocks sometimes. It’s not the clarity, it’s the lack of magnification.  I tried out a zoom eyepiece at a local shop and I’m definitely going to get one – it makes a hell of a difference.  So, I would recommend at least 22×50 with some sort of zoom. There is a scope and tripod set at www.quicks.com that looks pretty reasonable for the money (but I have not tried it – it just looks good on spec, IMHO). If you get a straight scope, you might want to consider getting a tripod with mount capable of z-axis rotation – it can make life much easier.  If you can get one that rotates in X, Y and Z you can pretty much cope with any ground variations. Clubs in Pittsburgh, PA

Question:

Hey all,     I just recently moved to the Pittsburgh area, just north of the city.  I am looking for an archery club in the area that has an outdoor range and a good 3-D course.  I have found a decent pro-shop with a nice indoor range, but I need to shoot more than just 20 yards.     Any help would be greatly appreciated Michael Crowe

Martin Firecat Compound Bow (Quality?)

Question:

My father bought a Martin Firecat bow over the internet, and I am curious to find out what the quality is of this particular model.  If anyone knows anything, could you let me know.  I want to know more about reliability, accuracy, durability, etc. * Sent from AltaVista http://www.altavista.com Where you can also find related Web Pages, Images, Audios, Videos, News, and Shopping.  Smart is Beautiful

It is a little bit outdated bow, but the quality of that bow was very good. Tell me more about the specs, what kind of limbs? XR? XRG? Straight? Which cams? Tri draw flite wheels? Sonic? Z-cams? Steel cable? Fast Flite system? — Sven

Response:

I have the 92 Firecat X-Pro with straight limbs and Sonic wheels 65-80 Lbs. It is a breeze to shoot but is quite heavy.  It will make a good 3D Range bow but is heavy in the woods if you wish to hunt with it.  I do miss the Sonic wheels as they are the easiest to pull even at 80 Lbs and are fairly quiet.  Your father can use this bow for a long time however I would recommend you check the axles on this old bow to ensure they are in good condition and replace if needed to keep it shooting straight.

With a little luck, his father got the bow directly from Terry Martin. In that case, it is an unused bow. He sells old Martin bows at eBay. — Sven

Response:

I’m not sure about the type of limbs, but I can find out. It has Z-cams and came wrapped in plastic.  Brand new.  I believe it is 39" axle to axle, 75% let off, and 55-75#.  I don’t know the year of the bow either.  He did get it off of ebay.  I appreciate your replies.  More to come probably tomorrow. * Sent from AltaVista http://www.altavista.com Where you can also find related Web Pages, Images, Audios, Videos, News, and Shopping.  Smart is Beautiful

Z-cams are pretty good. Smooth to draw, fast, but also pretty accurate! The Firecat is forgiving. With Z-cams I am sure, he got straight glas limbs. >believe it is 39" axle to axle, 75% let off, and 55-75#.  I >don’t know the year of the bow either.  He did get it off of >ebay.

Ask him: If the seller was   "sporthouse"  than he got a brand new bow from Terry MARTIN, the oldest son of Gail Martin the boss of MARTIN Archery. In that case a very good deal!!  Full warranty. — Sven

League score sheet needed

Question:

I’m new to this newsgroup and thought this would be the first place to look for some help. I’m tying to help out a friend who shoots in a bow league. He has been tasked with making a spread sheet to keep track of 10 or 11 teams of shooters, I think 2 per team? Anyway, he needs to track the stats for each shooter and each team. Then he hopes to be able to get average’s for both the shooters and the teams plus totals to see who wins. He is also hoping that there is a way to get a rotating schedule out of it too. Anyone know of a site or place I can get the basic format from? Or something to get me going on the right road? Thanks for any help offered! Jon Foster. PS. We use Excel if you know of one pre made…

Looking for Les Newson (Bradford?)

Question:

I’m looking for a contact number for Les Newson who I believe lives in the Bradford area. Les makes (or used to make) archery-related leather goods. TIA — Murray

I received a Lez Newsome quiver as a gift from the WIC committee in 1995. Inside is a card with the following information.  Since it was ‘95 it might be out of date.  What a fine piece of craftsmanship, I do hope you are able to do business with this firm. Several scottish archers wear a sun-visor made by Lez… nice piece of work, and not available anywhere else. I’ll try the number you suggest and see where that takes me! Many thanks.

If anyone wants to see some pictures of Lez’s work then (somewhat strangely given I haven’t worked there for three years) my archery page at Leeds University is still alive. The photos were taken with an SGI IndyCam, the result is a very dark picture on a PC, so it helps if you have something which can do some gamma correction on the images – but even so you can get the idea. http://mistral.leeds.ac.uk/~stephen/archery.html Note that I haven’t seen Lez for about two years as I now live on the other side of the country and have been off the competition circuit due to injury. The last I heard he had given up the leather work full time and gone back to work, due to lack of demand, which is something of a pity. However I am sure he was still doing it in his spare time. -stephen

Response:

I have to say that I had the pleasure to see some of Lez’s work close up…it is truly a work of art…almost a shame to put arrows in it. I would recommend him to anyone. Keep them in the custard. As far as I can remember that is his address. He is still around, shooting compound now. He was a one man band but I have been told that he has had to become a wage slave like the rest of us a couple of years ago.
