Shirley, you can’t be serious? Girl scouts? (Are these outdoor Ladyboys?) Whatever happened to Girl Guides? You could set the scene with Maid Marion and the Amazons…..

Hoyt riser brace height query

Question:

I am relatively new to the sport…have just purchased a Hoyt Gold Medallist recurve bow riser with Syntactic limbs. At the local pro archery center I had the very experienced chap make me up a new sure flight string. The brace height measures about 1/4" more than the largest height recommended for that riser by Hoyt. Is that likely to be a problem? Is there any stretch at all on the Sure Flight string? I have removed the most twists in the string I would like to see removed in order to decrease the brace height but that has had little effect. Any suggestions would be appreciated….Larry to send direct email remove "fake" from address

I would get a longer string.  Strings are cheap to make, or buy.   Alex     __O        _-<,_       (_)/ (_)

Response:

Hoyt recommend a min of 5 and a max of 30 twists. For full info go to www.hoytusa.co/technical and download the Recurve Manual pdf file. Ron Graves.

Limb?

Question:

I am looking at getting some carbon limbs for outdoors.  I am thinking of either the Win & Win Winacts or the Hoyt FX limbs.  I have a few questions though.  First I would like to know if Winacts come in heavier weights than 40lbs.  I looked on their website and it said that 40 was the heaviest they came.  Next How straight are the Winacts usually.  I know that Hoyt limbs aren’t always straight when they come from the factory.  I would rather not have to spend time trying to get a straight pair.     Lastly does anyone know of a good source of limbs either new or used.  I am looking for 42-44lbs long limbs.  If someone is looking to sell e-mail me and we can deal. Archeryking

Response:

Win&Win limbs come in weights up to 46#’s.  I have a set of 38 and 42#.  Both are straight.  I’ve had a few sets of carbon plus limbs, but had problems with each set.  I haven’t had problems with W&W’s though. Response:

The FX I believe it probably a better limb than the W&W WinAct but the WinAct is some pretty impressive limbs.  For the price I dont’ know if they can be beat .. I own a set that’s #42 and I love them to death.

<snip> Have you considered the new(ish) limbs from Border? I think they are called MLR2. I have the previous best set, the XP10 Evolution.  They are much better then the Hoyt Syntactic Carbon limbs (IMHO) and there’s hardly any difference in price.  I’ve heard the same about MLR2 vs. HoytFX. -Mac http://www.altservices.co.uk is usually a good bet for equipment.

Just ML2, IIRC. >I have the previous best set, the XP10 Evolution.  They are much >better then the Hoyt Syntactic Carbon limbs (IMHO) and there’s >hardly any difference in price.  I’ve heard the same about MLR2 >vs. HoytFX.

I agree in every respect.  For quality and good service, go to Border. Their wood/carbon limbs are a cheaper option and are excellent.  I have heard good things about W&W limbs though. John Kearney

Hoyt Axis Olympic style riser

Question:

anyone out there have any experience with the new Hoyt Axis riser?

Response:

From what I hear Hoyt is only marketing it in Europe at this time although I am sure selected archers have seen it.  I heard on this board that Butch Johnson hs been shooting one. I asked a dealer about one and was told that they hoped to have them available by April 15.  I see that some European suppliers already list them in their net catalogs. * Sent from RemarQ http://www.remarq.com The Internet’s Discussion Network * The fastest and easiest way to search and participate in Usenet – Free!

Response:

I saw an Aaxis riser today.  It certainly is heavy.  We weighed it and it was about 3.5 pounds vs 2.25 pounds for an avalon riser.  Add sight and stabilizer systems and you will have to really be strong to hold one up  On the other side of the coin though,  it should be very stable. * Sent from RemarQ http://www.remarq.com The Internet’s Discussion Network * The fastest and easiest way to search and participate in Usenet – Free!

Response:

Is there any reason in particular that you don’t like the Axis riser?  Have you even used one?

Response:

I’ve never used one, but Butch Johnson was the only one using it at the NAA Nationals yesterday. I hear he hated it at first. It uses FX limbs w/o an adapter, but all others need an adapter. I hear it’s very heavy, which is the main complaint. All this is 2nd or 3rd hand info.

The Axis sure looks sharp, I have to give it that. I just got my Elan in the post today and it’s every bit as pretty, though. If all goes well and my shoulder is healed up right, hopefully I’ll be back to recurve shooting soon…. LS > Alex     __O >        _-<,_ >       (_)/ (_)

Which is the problem with "2nd or 3rd hand info".  Butch shot a 298 with his Axis the day he got it, and shot 591/592 at Nationals.  He has never had a complaint about it.  That score will probably be enough to win when the tournament wraps up in West region this weekend.  Also, Butch was not the only archer with an Axis, Denise Parker and a few others were shooting Axis as well.  There will be quite a few at Vegas this weekend as well.

Just heard Sky stopped production as a company totaly.I just got new limbs which Earl Hoyt said to send back due to a lamination defect.Does anyone know if they will be in business to honor warrantee’s?

Response:

Jeff, Please stop spreading false rumors.  Call SKY at 314-731-1600.  They have been able to fix your problems before and you will find they still will.  Sky is fully operational.

why would you not call them to ask them directly, especially seeing your quote of having already talked to them about the problem? — ARC in Lago Vista, TX Dilbert’s Words of Wisdom: I love deadlines.  I especially like the whooshing sound they make as they go flying by.

Martin Fury vs. Hoyt Viper!!

Question:

A buddy of mine runs a archery shop and is a Hoyt dealer he got this new viper in and I have a 96 Martin Fury we shot through the chronograph and we measured weight of the bow measured the draw length and the whole 9 ytds everthing was the same my fury shot 318fps and this new viper that was supposed to be faster shot 295 and we shot a dozen times and still the fury was much faster needless to say i left with a real big smile!! Regaurds Brian

Response:

Just curious .. did you shoot the same arrows?  Was EVERYTHIGN except the bow different?  Like was even the rest the same?  The release was same? Did you change bow between friends?  DId each of you shoot each shot? Although things like a release, rest, sight, etc. everything you think wouldn’t affect speed shouldn’t affect the speed of the bow, it might make a difference.  I’d say really to make sure everything was even, the bows were bare, exact same poundage, same tiller if possible and brace height, u both use the same arrows, and u both shoot each of the bows. This is just my 2 cents worth, but I had to reply because I shoot for Hoyt. I have a 99 Viper with the Redline H.O. setup on it. I set my bow at 66 pounds and I have a 29" draw length. Shawn

You have to consider, that viper was a new bow. I guess, you have been trimming the fury, for best results. If you would do the same with the viper its speed would increase. Tonny

Response:

This is for Shawn, Shawn I was wondering how forgiving your viper is I’ve been looking at them and trying to decide on it or not. I realize with a 51/2" brace height it can’t be to forgiving but would like an honest opinion on how it shoots and acts. Recurve risers

Question:

What are the advantage or disadvantages of different length risers offered by recurve bow manufacturers. If a 5′ girl is shooting a 66" bow and goes to a short riser I know that the draw weight increases 2 pounds if she uses the same limbs but are there any other reasons for her to go to a shorter riser.  Thanks

Response:

I once directed that same question to Hoyt directly.  The answer I received from Mike Gerard (he signed off as " Recurve Archery Secialist") is as follows: "The short riser is recommended for archers with a draw length under 28".  The reason for this is that the short riser provides a bit more performance (Foot per Second).  The gain is small, 3-5 fps depending on the actual set-up". Hope this helps, and good luck! SD
