Simple Handicap system

Question:

Hi,  Our local archery club is planning to have a indoor 50 ft winter league and would like to use some kind of handicap system to give the competition some kind of validity for the competitors of different ability. I have read about those of FITA and GNAS but would like something easier, that we don’t have to use all kinds of charts to make the computations with. I realize these other systems would give a better representation of abilities but we’re trying to stick with the old adage "Keep it simple stupid" the stupid being me. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Rudy

Response:

The club that I am in use 80% of perfect with the archers average.  The average is the last three scores that the archer shot. Don Casteel

By the way, I can allow myself to be arogant and call myself a traditional bowbuilder. So if anyone can help me I would be very thankfull

Spotting Scopes and Tripods

Question:

Here’s a question for your outdoor target archers I just bought my first spotting scope after having sucess using one lately. Question is, can I use any ol tripod or is there something I need to get to put a spotting scope on a tripod? Han Su Kim — —– Han Su James Kim —–

Any tripod will do but I recommend a sandbag attached to make it the most stable in all conditions. Attached to the bottom of course to hold it down. Hope this answers your question. wPm —  S&B Enterprises     Sunland,CA. 91040          Fax/Ans/Phn:(818) 951-0274

Don’t get a cheap one.  Get a good quality one that will withstand the winds you will have to deal with.  It is very frustrating to watch a scope fall over on someone else’s bow during a tournament because they used a cheap tripod.  If George T. is around he can be more specific.  He is king in FITA when it comes to techknogadgets!   Rick

I’ve been very happy with the Bogen 3205LC and grip-action head. Make sure you get the LC version; the column is 5" longer, which allows you to splay the legs and still get a decent height for the scope. The grip-action head takes some getting used to, but once you’re used to it you can align the scope with one hand very quickly, which is useful if you’re shooting two details and have to take the scope off the line each time. The one criticism I have of this tripod for archery is that it doesn’t have spreaders on the legs, so if you’re taking it off and on the line a lot, you have to make sure the legs are out properly each time. a. — Angus Duggan, Harlequin Inc, 1201 Third Ave,  | 40lb 68" Hoyt Elan, 30" Suite 2380, Seattle, WA 98101, U.S.A.         | ACE 470, 30" Kudlacek Multirod http://www.dcs.ed.ac.uk/home/ajcd/archery/    | AGF sight, 20 str DynaFlite http://www.tardis.ed.ac.uk/~ajcd/archery/     | Email adverts unwelcome

info on old MARS bow requested

Question:

Hi All. I’ve just started archery (3 1-hour sessions with local club) in the UK. As I was telling my sister this, her partner pipes up that he used to do archery, scuttles off to the shed, and comes back with a useful looking FITA-recurve bow. How convenient! So I clean the cobwebs and stuff off it, take it along to the next session, and it shoots OK. Yeah, like I’d know the difference :-) I got the club coach to string it, and check it out. Everybody stood WELL back on that first draw!. So… I can’t find the MARS name anywhere. Can the assembled archers of the net help: Description: 68" Length, 34 Lbs draw Riser is laminated at the front (light woods) with a solid, dark hardwood handle. Limbs appear to be maple/glass fibre. Lower Limb is marked "MARS", with a logo of an archer shooting a bow – this is very stylised. Approximate age – 10-15 years. All and any info gratefully recieved.         BugBear

If this is a one piece bow rather than a take-down: I think that might be an old Border Archery bow – possibly from the days before Border Archery (called King’s of Kelso). Can anyone confirm? — Alex Ramage

Thanks for the cooperation. I forgot (omitted) to say that it’s a take down. I mean it’s obviously a take down, it’s got bolts and stuff. Oh. You mean you can’t *SEE* the bolts out there in net-land? (oops – sorry)         BugBear.

Training venues in Menlo Park, CA?

Does anyone know of a good training venue for a serious recurve Fita archer in Menlo Park, CA. (perhaps Stanford University has a club)? The NAA is the official US arm of FITA.  One of the board of governors is Carol Strausburg of Fountain Valley CA.  Her number is (714)435-1757.  She doesn’t live in the area you are interested in, but she should be able to put you in touch with the right people.
