Question:

Hi All, I’m keen to take up archery, I’ve tried it a couple of times just for about an hour overall and want to start out.  I used a recurve barebow and it gave me a good taster. Does anyone know of people who shoot or clubs near South Glasgow area, I stay just outside Hamilton. Any help would be appriciated. Neil

Simple Handicap system

Question:

Hi,  Our local archery club is planning to have a indoor 50 ft winter league and would like to use some kind of handicap system to give the competition some kind of validity for the competitors of different ability. I have read about those of FITA and GNAS but would like something easier, that we don’t have to use all kinds of charts to make the computations with. I realize these other systems would give a better representation of abilities but we’re trying to stick with the old adage "Keep it simple stupid" the stupid being me. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Rudy

Response:

The club that I am in use 80% of perfect with the archers average.  The average is the last three scores that the archer shot. Don Casteel

Archery Clubs in Toronto

Question:

Can anyone recommend an archery club in the Toronto area. I’ve searched online and only found three – one is near Orangeville (too far away), one north of Markham (also too far away) and another is at UofT (can’t join because they told me I have to be a current student or alumnus). I’d like to find a club within the city if possible. Any help offered is greatly appreciated. BTW, I used to belong to the Nepean Archers – near Ottawa – in the late ’70’s and want to resume the sport. I’d also be interested in some refresher lessons, so a club that offers some form of schooling would be ideal, but not imperative. Cheers, Dave

Just do a search for Ontarion Archers Association and you will find every club availlable in Ontario.

ARCHERY UNITED KINGDOM

Question:

Hi there everyone I decided that it was about time people in the UK should have a forum where they could meet and chat about all things British, share tips and discuss Archery Competitions. Ive done this by setting up a room in www.paltalk.com called ARCHERY UK. This room wont always be active and for the time being will be open from 10pm to 12 pm on Friday and Saturday Evenings.   In order for you to take advantage of this you will required to download the paltalk program.  There are two ways for you to interact in the ARCHERY UK room and this is achieved by either textual chat (typing) or verbal communication (audio)  for the verbal communication you will require speakers and a microphone – the program includes an easy setup procedure to assist you. If this takes off then the opening hours will be increased as per member requests. Of course this room is not just for those people in the UK   if you are outside the UK then dont worry you are most welcome to come along and give us any insight you have to this sport. Anyhow I hope to see you all there at some point   if not  then it was a good idea at the time..  Take care everyone

Nope, that’s why I get out and meet people, whilst talking about and doing archery, rather than just sit behind a screen and whinge about a lack of opportunity. >  its no wonder we british get > a bad name with ignorance like yours.

I blame it on the education system , the one that can’t get enable people to  use correct spelling, grammar or punctuation > yeah well if you wanna keep to > yourself and your great little club  then go for it    but dont complain at > other people whom are interested in chatting

Generally or about archery? Lets face it , usenet, IRC , ICQ, Yahoo and a myriad other  forms of internet communication have been available since long before you had your "bright idea" . Don’t you think that if there was a real, pressing need for UK archers to spend evenings glued to monitors ,when they could be refletching, restringing, or anything else , then it would have been created a long time ago?

If I could work out what "Sarcasim " is meant to be , maybe I could agree with you. BTW, top posting is  on Usenet  as close as you can get to talking on the shooting line, and as for using hotmail….

Response:

What’s wrong with hotmail!? (rhetorical question :-}) I’m sure most of us spend enough time on these damned machines, without trying to conduct a "virtual" social life as well… I have a nasty feeling that the noise to signal ratio of the average chat-room (or whatever) is well past the point of utility. It’s bad enough on usenet (estimate: 75% noise?). Dedicated message boards can be a bit better, but it depends on the people who visit – you need a core of serious, knowledgeable regulars to make it work. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> wow you really do have a closed mind dont you > Nope, that’s why I get out and meet people, whilst talking about and > doing archery, rather than just sit behind a screen and whinge about a > lack of opportunity. >  its no wonder we british get > a bad name with ignorance like yours. > I blame it on the education system , the one that can’t get enable > people to  use correct spelling, grammar or punctuation > yeah well if you wanna keep to > yourself and your great little club  then go for it    but dont complain at > other people whom are interested in chatting > Generally or about archery? Hi Hans,           I don’t know of one but if you log on to www.gnas.org which is the governing body for archery in the UK and look at how to and select the region that you will be staying in it will give you a contact telephone number for the regional secretary who will put you in touch with your nearest club. Hope this helps Neil

Must be a new sort of tape that I haven’t seen that can include your name? — Marc.

Response:

Sharpie marker? Bohning also has a self adhesive gizmo that, when applied to the arrow shaft, looks like a cap dip and a crest. E-Z Crest I think they are called? Seriously though, I’ve seen a lot of people use pin striping tape to crest arrows. Archery in Boston?

Question:

Hi, Just moved into Cambridge/Boston area in Massachusetts. Was wondering if there are any archery clubs around here that meets regularly? Thanks

Response:

> Just moved into Cambridge/Boston area in Massachusetts. > Was wondering if there are any archery clubs around here that meets > regularly?

There has been an archery club at MIT, I would check that out. At times it has been pretty active, at other times it has been completely dormant. If you are interested in FITA, target-style, shooting then the best place is probably Archery USA in Dedham. If your main interest is 3D then there are plenty of clubs in the area. However, I have no clue about them since I’m a target guy.         Marty Sasaki

Response:

Absolutely Archery USA is the place to be in Boston for target shooting.
