Dear archers, The KNHS Concordia would like to know if there are any drawings, sketches, photos, ideas etc. etc. for a car or apparatus to move the targets for an outdoor FITA. All archery clubs must face the problem of moving the targets, without asking the archers themselves, and/or harming the backs of the volunteers. This discussion is also placed on the Archery forum of the KNHS Concordia. http://www.knhs-concordia.org

We designed and built two carts which made it possible to move the targets, standing on their racks, from one shooting distance to the next. You just lift the whole thing a few cm, move it and set it down again. Even the archers can do it
The idea was to have something simple, no hydraulics, electrics or other complicated stuff, which usually fails in the heat of a competition. Attached are sketches showing the principle and overall dimensions. Dieter VSG Stapelfeld (near Hamburg)
Dieter, Thank you for sending me your drawings. We will try to look at it and maybe build them to see how tey work.I will place the pictures also at the site of Concordia. Edwin

Hi there, Im looking for some information. My club goes indoors for the winter in three weeks time here in Scotland. However our problem is we dont have any nets and we dont have loads of money certainly not the amount Quicks archery are asking. Does anyone know of any netting manufacturer in the UK whom can supply archery nets to size and or does anyone know of any nets for sale. Size approx 30 ft by 12 ft. Any advice is welcomed Cheers
Can you beg, borrow or scrounge some old lorry canvas sheets. Provided that you suspend them from the top and leave them hanging loose away from the wall they will absorb the energy of the arrow for the occasional miss. Obviously they are not as good as the real thing, and will get holes in them. — John Grove

If you go this route, make sure you hang the stuff properly. You don’t want it taut. You want it to be able to absorb some of the energy by swinging a bit when it is hit. That will cut down on the number of arrows that put holes in the material. Alex __O _-<,_ (_)/ (_)
best way is to have 2-3 sheets, each with a space of 6-12 inches or there abouts – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->Can you beg, borrow or scrounge some old lorry canvas sheets. Around here (Wisconsin, USA) I routinely find rolls of carpet in construction dumpsters (skips?) around office buildings. Every time they remodel for a new tenent they put in new carpetting, and this is tight heavy duty stuff.

WHAT? I have to pay $ 175.- and can shoot in Vegas? What a disappointment! Till this moment I thought, that the "Vegas shoot out" is the summit of some other, smaller tournaments. And only the winner of the other tournaments get invitations. :-(( — Sven

Where can I find the original rules? I mean, what kind of targets, diameter of targets have I to hit the inner ten (like FITA indoor)? I searched the NFAA web page but I didn’t find anything. Sven
hmmm. let’s see. Las Vegas. MONEY! MORE MONEY! <GGG> BRING LOTS OF MONEY! :) (I too thought it was some kind of penultimate when I first heard of it…. ) The NFAA uses a rather different target. I’ve attended ONE whole indoor tourney. The targets were light colored with dark navy blue center rings. The targets were so dark that I had trouble seeing the various rings, even though they went to the trouble of putting a 250 watt SPOTLIGHT on each separate target butt. (the lights were on the floor in front of the butt aiming up at the target). Perhaps more knowledgable folks will jump in with info on the targets…sorry. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text ->money. <G> >ANYONE can shoot there if they pony up the fee. Sven, I have shot in the Vegas tournaments sevel of times and let me try to go over it with you. The Vegas target face is a 3 target face in a triangle layout. These three faces are yellow red and blue faces. The yellow is 80 cm with two inner rings. The smallest ring is th X ring which is 20 cm and the ten ring is 40 cm. the rest of the yellow ring is a 9 ring out ot 80 cm. Hope you are following. Then the red rings (2) the inner red ring which is 120 cm is scored a 8 and outer red ring which is 160 cm is scored a 7, finally the blue ring is scored a 6 and this ring is 200 cm. You score the X as a 10X and count the X’s for ties. This is shot at 18 meters. Three arrows each end and you MUST put one arrow in each face. No order is followed in which face is shot first or last as long as you put one aroow in each face. If you put more than one arrow in a face than you get a O for one face and you relinquish the higher score in the face that has two arrows. You straddle the 18 meter line and you have 2 minutes to get your 3 arrows out which is timed from the master clock above the butts. If any arrows is not shot at the end of the 2 minutes then these arrows are 0’s. Our archery club has recently acquired a new indoor range. It’s 70+ yards long by 45+yards wide. We would like to have an indoor 3D shoot this winter but no one has any experience setting one up. Doe anyone know where we can get or have some suggestions? GJB
We shoot 3D Indoor all the time. Its Great for those cold days. The way we usually set things up is to 1. first create a shooting line. This is normally best when the line is straight so that no one at another station is standing farther forward then the lane beside you. 2. then we create shooting lanes by using old Christmas trees. Real and Artificial. Bushes. and any thing else you can think of. 3. most of the time we will not put consecutive lanes beside each other. We shoot at the first lane then move down a few lanes for the second lane. Jump around. Unless your walking room is limited. 4. Just set the targets out at different distances. 5. If your targets are set close to each other then it would be a good idea to but a number by the target and the shooting spot so that no one shoots at the wrong target. 6. Have fun.

: Our archery club has recently acquired a new indoor range. It’s 70+ yards : long by 45+yards wide. We would like to have an indoor 3D shoot this winter : but no one has any experience setting one up. Doe anyone know where we can : get or have some suggestions? : GJB I’ve shot at 2, neither nearly as large as the space you have. If I was setting it up, I’d use the 70+ yards as width. Lots of space for shooters. I’d also place the targets and obstacles such that the shot direction is not straight down range. By varying the altitude of the targets (use stands, etc.), you can create a safe arrangement which makes yardage judging much more difficult than just "distance to the beam". One of the ranges I’ve shot at it a 40 yard range and does this, it is very good practice for outdoor 3-d shooting. -Scot — Scot E. Heath, P.E. "Nothing beats turning clay to dust." Fort Collins, CO
This event is looming once again. Would all GNAS members try and get in a vote for our top archers so that this year we may get some representation. To those of you who receive this, please pass it on to other club members and other clubs and archers that you know. Thanks Dave.

I really wouldn’t waste your time, The BBC SP award will go to whoever has had most airtime on the BBC. Lets face it, if it didn’t wouldn’t the governors want to know why the producers are wasting time on ‘Personalities " that the viewers don’t want. Call me an old cynic but… Marc
I agree that an archer is unlikely to win, but that is not the point, if we do not vote then we will always remain an ignored group, vote and they will have to take notice. It is apathy like this that is keeping our sport from progressing and climbing out of the"minority" groups. So wake up and vote.

You miss the point. You galvanise every archer, friend and family to vote for one person. The BBC total the votes, find out that someone they have never heard of, and someone they have never had the gumption to televise ( Cos they don’t play with balls) has won. This leave the BBC with egg all over their face, they have a "Winner" that the general public has never heard of, a TV show that will fall flat because they haven’t any footage of the winner and they have to try and explain why they have never televised the winner. Its not gonna happen is it? If your not on the "short list" of sportsmen that are plugged leading up to it your not going to win.best way of propheysing the winner? Measure the amount of screen time and column inches of a sport the BBC televises thewn look for the person the mention form that sport . My bet, The scots guy who coaches Manchester United. Marc
You still miss the point, it’s not about getting the "Sports Personality" award, it is about getting our people in the show, with or without tv footage, so that their achievements are recognised on national television Just by not taking action condemns our sport to the nonentity that it is at present, get some form of recognition and it may have a chance to flourish. It is time that all archers woke up and put away their apathy and made an attempt to make our sport "GROW".

The people in the show are ones who have been featured on the BBC , its as simple as that . Your looking at this from the wrong end. Marc
Did you notice last year that a long list of British World Champions, and near world champions was read out without a mention of any archers? I prophesy that exactly the same will happen again this year despite our registration of votes. — John R Grove

Although I’m not English and probably not eligible to vote in this matter I must say that your wise words should be understood better by many. We have the same situation here in Norway, very little media coverage. We have to realise that we will never (not in the next 10 years at least) replace football (explanation for you overseas people: real football, not the Rugby for Cowards, is the major sport here in Europe) as the most popular sport. BUT, getting coverage once in a while is better than never. We are not the only small sport, and we are not the only ones who suffer from undercoverage in the media. We have to work harder to get media coverage. A shooting sport where they shoot at moving targets (I think it was called running boar here in Norway) has an olympic competition. I had never heard of it, nor had most of the other people in Norway. Then suddenly we had an olympic champion. They showed the guy on TV, interviewed him and not much has been heard of the sport later. As one guy here said, "our problem is that all the archers just want to stand on the shooting line and shoot by themselves." If I told you the name of this guy those who pay attention to what is going on internationally in archery would recognize it. He knows, and locally here we have discussed this among the clubs again and again, that we need more active members who are willing to shoot less and do more of the other stuff. For instance, and as a start, in our archery district organisation we have decided to have one person responsible for media relations. That gives no immediate solution but it makes it easier to build a relationship to different media persons, because they will know that whenever they are wondering about what’s happening to those olympic gold medal candidates in archery they can call one number and then either get information or find out who to talk to. This same person is responsible for informing media about what goes on in archery. The responsibility of the clubs is to ensure this person gets result lists as soon as possible after the end of a competition. Once in a while the media will actually use what is sent to them, and that once in a while is for now all we can hope for. Start moving. You may not get to where you want, but at least the possibility exists. Sit down and wait for a miracle to happen, and I guarantee you that you won’t get to where you want. Cfr. the example of our olympic champion if you believe in miracles. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> > I agree that an archer is unlikely to win, but that is not the point, if > we > > do not vote then we will always remain an ignored group, vote and they > will > > have to take notice. This discussion is interesting but getting nowhere! It might be fun to invite the BBC to define the term ’sports personality’. At this time, it is doubtful whether an archer would ever be mentioned even if he/she won an Olympic Gold medal. The reason is fairly obvious……’ratings’! I suspect that the Beeb gurus have to approve those chosen by the viewers on the basis that the elected person(s), must have enhanced ratings significantly and consequent;ly justify their ‘raison d’etre’! No harm in trying though…you never know. Someone at the top table may like archery! Richard White

and as far as TV is concerned thats exactly it , lets face it its not the most televisual of sports is it?At least with darts they had a man Screaming ONE HUNRED AND EIGHTY!!!! and of course darts was very cheap to televise. Neither of those apply to archery. Marc

I suspect ratings is really what it is about. It will be football, perhaps snooker, a bit of rugby, a bit of golf and probably a boxer in the line-up. All the sports the Beeb pay vast amounts of your money and mine to broadcast. I suppose as my kids are football crazy, we get some value out of this spending of the licence fee as a family. Perhaps if we all take advantage of some of the laws still on the books (i.e. an archer may use the village green to practice the use of a longbow on a Sunday and is exempt from prosecution if someone walks in front of the butt and gets hit (I haven’t tried this yet as we don’t have a village green)) and atleast get on the BBC even if it is on the news. Those living on the English side of the river Severn may also shoot at any Welshman on the banks on a Sunday
(though I’d suggest using blunts :-< ). — Stephen
Nice Idea. But, I am sorry to say that these "laws" were revoked some years ago now. Never mind. Send in some votes and we may still get a mention. Dave

<Snip> Forgive me if my memory is failing me but I seem to remember that Simon Terry was mentioned in the program when he won a bronze at Korea (was that the one before Barcelona !), infact I think he was an invited member of the audience. The solution is simple – let’s produce some Olympic Gold medalists and then see ….. David Needham
Ahh.. It’s all coming back to me now (I looked it up !) Simon won two bronze at Barcelona, Indiv & team (along with Richard Priestman and Steve Hallard), Richard & Steve also won bronze team at Korea in 1988.

We already have at least two archers who are No 2 in the world. Why just the Olympics. They were 3 years ago after all.

Coz the Olympic games is the only time that the media will focus on archery, and even then only if we have a serious medal winner. If say, Alison Williamson had won the World Championships then it could have made the local rag, but wouldn’t be front page national news – Geena, well that would be another story
Again, I seem to remember that Simon Terry was on the front page of the Sun when he won his bronze, but that was because the DSS took his dole money away, claiming that "he was not available for work" as he was in Barcalona representing his country. The SUN, of course, lept at the chance to be "defender of the people" and threw in a bit of their patriotism and flag waving B&*((S*IT.
In other words, get the votes in so that they are aware of us. This may then make them think about who we are.

club. I believe the GNAS site has relevant info (can’t remember URL offhand, but it shouldn’t be difficult to find). Good luck. Hope you get it off the ground — Ian Priestnall, Assendelft, the Netherlands. "The Way of Heaven may be likened to the drawing of a bow". (Tao Te Ching)
Thats a helpfull site..Thanks – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – >http://www.gnas.u-net.com/
Does anyone know the history of the gold, red,and blue color scheme which appears on targets? I am trying to find out who and when this happened. Bill

Known as the Prince’s Colours – they were regulated by George, Prince of Wales (son of King George III, and who was an enthusiastic archer in his younger days) in the late part of the eighteenth century. Before the use of the straw boss with a circular face on it at this time, archers used to shoot at butts made of a turf bank with a white cloth ‘mark’ on it. When archery became a sport needing scoring, the circular target with coloured circles came into use.
Sunday, August 30th is the 5th annual Iron City Beer 3-D Open at Bull Creek Rod and Gun Club, located just north east of Pittsburgh, PA. 250 – 350 shooters will compete for money prizes (40-50 percent of the door, depending on class, plus sponser money), dozens of door prizes and more. Bull Creek’s courses have been praised for their variety of shots, topography, and scenery. For more information, maps to the club, etc. click on this link: http://members.tripod.com/~Bullcreek See you there, -Hunter
I been to this shoot and it is a good tournament. The area was great with different looks at the targets. You have fields, hills and valleys. Fun for everyone to shoot, not just the experienced shooter. Everyone has a chance to win. You can also find a map at http://homepage.third-wave.com/badboy/archery.htm It has directions and a map also….. Plus it has all the shoots around the Pittsburgh them a call. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Sunday, August 30th is the 5th annual Iron City Beer 3-D Open at Bull Creek > Rod and Gun Club, located just north east of Pittsburgh, PA. > 250 – 350 shooters will compete for money prizes (40-50 percent of the door, > depending on class, plus sponser money), dozens of door prizes and more. > Bull Creek’s courses have been praised for their variety of shots, > topography, and scenery. is 241 out of 300 good for a newbie, this was my third 3d shoot. — A good shooter knows his bow.

That is good at some courses, average at others, and poor at some. That is a poor unlimited score and a great traditional score. How did you do compared to others in your class?

Always remember that as long as you have fun, you’ll continue to enjoy, and get better, and score better, but I agree, post your class and some more info next time, happy shooting

I totally disagree with that responce. 241 for a beginning archery is a very good score. Provided you were shooting at distances 20 yards and beyond. However, as the above author implied, some courses will be VERY challanging. But, I would not use these for comparison. Most national shoots provide you with VERY clear targets. Some locals do all they can to increase the difficulty of the shot. DO NOT use shot difficulty as a comparison. Unless it is how you hunt.
ANY SCORE FOR THE 1ST OR THE 3TH IS GOOD THE MOST IMPORTION THING IS THAT YOU LIKE IT AND WONT TO GET BETTER.THEN THE HIGH SCORE WILL COME. BOWDOKTER.
